Ashokasundari
Did you know that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati also had a daughter? It is believed that Ashokasundari i.e. Lord Ganesha’s sister, was created from the Kalpavriksha, a wish-fulfillment tree. This is when Parvati wished to have a daughter to reduce her loneliness. The name ‘Ashokasundari’ is derived from the word ‘Ashoka’ which means to get relief from Parvati’s shoka i.e. sorrow, whereas ‘Sundari’ refers to a ‘beautiful girl’.
As per the legends, once Parvati and Shiva were taking a walk in the forest of Nandanvan. During the walk, they came across the Kalpavriksha tree. Lord Shiva explained to the Goddess that this is the tree that fulfills all desires. In order to try it, Parvati desired a beautiful girl and the tree fulfilled the wish immediately. When Ashokasundari was created, Parvati told her that a king in the lunar dynasty named Nahusha will be born who will then become her husband.
