Tamil Brahmin women in Karachi, 1940. In 1921, when communal reservations were introduced by the Justice party in the Madras Presidency, there was a huge exodus of Tamil and Palghat Brahmins to North India (British India), especially Karachi and Lahore. Mani Shanker Iyer has stated how his father migrated to Lahore in the 1920s due to this problem. The Nobel Laureate Subramanium Chandrasekhar’s father worked in Lahore and he was born there. They said Karachi and Bombay (now Mumbai) were twin cities and were similar. There was a ferry every day from Bombay taking passengers on a short journey to Karachi.
