It isn’t an easy thing for foreigners to fall into Indian roots and become a pundit in any of its cultural threads.
Here we have ‘Dario Calvuruso’ an Italian who chose to do ‘Indology’ a subject we have never heard of. Well, in the western world ‘Indology’ specifically means the study of Sanskrit literature and Hinduism.
We have heard the stories about Hippies falling in line with Shaivism and settling in action with marijuana, self-instigating themselves to walk the never ending macadam to reach its glory, by the difficult renouncement of mundane desires.
After Ramana Maharishi in the early 50’s, the western followers for the ashram were seen increasing in Thiruvannamalai .Thanks to the books written by ‘Paul Brunton’ and few others who were loud enough to attract the people from the west.
Well, but at the same time, we also know that ‘Sri Prabhupadh’ of ‘Iskon’ could persuade or entice the westerners to reach out to ‘Krishna Consciousness’ and keep it growing till date. The experiences of westerners with Sri Sathya Saibaba was a parallel episode. All this could only show us the increasing demographic extension of the faith of the land.
These are all generic in terms of faith and its wellness that any of us can understand. But in terms of knowledge and practice there is not much of a clue of what they could achieve that we couldn’t.
‘Dario Calvuruso’ is one person I know, who has delved in depth into several subjects in ‘Indology’ and has achieved to become a master of his own light.
While he reached ‘India’ for a cause and learned a spectrum of things from many masters, Dario was our tenant and neighbour for a couple of years in Srirangam.
In his pursuit to knowledge and practice he included Barathanatyam and Yoga and for sure he had a bodyline required. A strict Vegetarian and a soft spoken simple man, he was seen as a saintly personality up for something in the land of Vedas. His career started in the north and reached up to the south till Srirangam where we had opportunity to have fine discussions with him.
Today he is one of the top teachers of ‘NAVAKARNA VINYASA’ the details of which can be googled, and he is a successful practising teacher who takes sessions for young enthusiasts in many countries. In the last two decades his growth path has seen some staggering heights making us feel that he could probably be one born for the kind of mission he delivers today.
We in our family could recall the moments when he would fondly come home for some hot ‘Tomato Rasam’ and chat with us always leaving us in awe. The best story I can recall in a line is that when a cobra bit him and when he was quickly hospitalised the first thing he said was ‘Please see that the snake is not killed!’
I have a doubt Dario , that only you may clarify ! – Could you by any chance be or have become Shiva Himself?
Whoever you are, you are one of the most interesting persons we know.
Love you ‘Dario Calvaruso’. The ‘Adi Yogi’ we know.
