Why do Telugu people term Tamils as AravaVallu?
A king who is a character in Mahabharata is the son of the Naga(snake) princess.
The country is ruled by Aravan, Aravan+Nadu – Aravanadu. People of that country are called Aravanaattaar in Tamil, and Aravadu in Telugu.
His temple is in Koovagam, Villupuram district. Another meaning of Aravam in Tamil is the snake. Interestingly we can see his idol with a snake crown. This is the only temple in the world where the deity is worshipped as theirs by the Transgenders called ‘ Aravani’in Tamil.
.Kannada people refer to Tamils as Konga which means people of Kongu Nadu, the western Tamilnadu. Malayalees call Tamils Paandi which means people of Paandi Nadu – Pandyan empire which is southern Tamilnadu. So apart from mythical reasons as above, the logical reasoning must be the likes that match the terms used by Kannadigas and Malayalis.
Aruva Naadu – a settlement of ARUVAALAR , a Vellaalar(farmer) community. The present Thiruttani Murugan temple and Kaalahasthi were known as Aruvaa Vadi Ooru. Aruvaalar அருவாளர் were named by the Telugu people as ARAVA VAALLU.
So similar to the fact that North Indians call the entire south Madrasi which means people from the state of Madras and Persians called Indians as Hindus – people across the river Indus.
